In April 2024, I began a handbag design internship at Steve Madden, Ltd. corporate headquarters in New York City. This role involved working with both the Steve Madden Off-Price (SMOP) and Betsey Johnson Mainline (BJML) handbag divisions, allowing me to contribute to various projects across both brands.

During the internship, my tasks included creating spec illustrations using Adobe Illustrator, assisting with the documentation of shopping trips, conducting trend and design research, and developing mood boards for buyers. I also participated in market meetings with major retailers like TJX Companies, Inc., and had the opportunity to design a proposed capsule collection for SMOP.

A significant project I worked on was designing a kitsch handbag for BJML, which required completing a full, 17-page CAD file. These kitsch bags are typically sold at prominent retailers such as Macy's, Von Maur, and Dillard's, with prices ranging from $88 to $168. My bag design "Spin Me" was released on the Betsey Johnson website in May of 2025 at a price of $142. It has been exhilarating to see my design work become a fully-realized product sold under one of the most successful, global fashion brands.

In addition to my design responsibilities, I was tasked to complete a team project with my fellow interns in which we developed a brand licensing proposal for Ed Hardy accessories. Our proposal was well-received, earning us a spot as finalists and the opportunity to present to Steve Madden's CEO, Edward R. Rosenfeld among other company executives. Leading my group in this project was a highlight of my internship, and I am proud of how effectively we executed our concept.

Overall, my two months at Steve Madden provided me with extensive insight into the fashion design process within a major $3 billion-a-year company and allowed me to refine my skills as a versatile designer.
